his short documentary by Emmy Award-winning producer and director Judy Kinberg celebrates the 50th anniversary of Alvin Ailey’s masterpiece, ‘Revelations,’ and illuminates the history and significance of this modern dance classic.
We also honor male impersonator Stormé DeLarverie of The Jewel Box Revue — a female impersonation company that toured the black theater circuit. The Jewel Box Revue was the first racially integrated female impersonation show on the circuit and DeLarverie was their only “drag king”.
Stormé DeLarverie was a performer and LGBTQ+ activist who was reported to have thrown the first punch at the Stonewall Uprising in NYC in 1969 while protecting members of the LGBTQ+ community. This #BlackHistoryMonth we honor her legacy by continuing to speak out against injustice.
