What in the world are we doing? As Nobel Prize winner and embattled Philippine journalist Maria Ressa speaks out — the disinformation threat on truth puts our democracy and our lives at risk.

Yet commercialism, corporations, and consumers constantly choose greed and avarice over truth and honor.

Throughout history facts have been distorted and manipulated for gain. The gap between the haves and have nots widens as equality and equity are compromised. The macho ego and rise of patriarchy are to blame mostly.

Even the influence of women portrayed in the bible has been doubted and debated for many years. There are quite a few biblical passages that are controversial, contestable, and make us cringe.

With Holy Week upon us let us take the time to reflect more deeply on these women, their roles, and how they have been presented or misinterpreted throughout history.

Ruth, Rachel, Rebecca

Take a closer look at these women of the bible — who made an impact in the holy book and shaped the world of Christianity.

Some of them were so important that they are venerated to this day — even considered religious pillars to many.

Esther, Bathsheba, Miriam

Others have had to have their stories retold more honestly — even then many are contesting the truth after too many years of blatant yet believed lies.

May we take the time to remember and honor these women for their valor and achievements. Because of them we have more powerful women in our lives today to set the record straight.

Delilah, Salome, Jezebel
